I inadvertently touched on this last post, but in addition to finding the perfect roast, I am in the process of trying to find the perfect cup of coffee, meaning the correct ratio of coffee grounds to water. In the past I have tried several things such as one heaping tablespoon per cup, or 1 1/2 level tablespoons per cup of water, but some days I would make a great pot and other days, following what I believed to be the same recipe would make a lousy pot of coffee.
I started my quest at 6 grams of coffee per cup of water. The cup displayed a significant amount of unique flavor. The Kenya beans that I was using tasted outrageously smokey and sweet, but the cup was relatively thin, meaning the flavor came and went fairly quickly.
I bumped up the ratio to 8 grams of coffee per cup of water for my next test. This certainly creates a much bolder flavor and fuller mouth feel, but I lost some of the unique characteristics of the beans that I noticed at 6 grams.
For my last test, I used 7.5 grams per cup. This seems to give me a fair balance between presenting the characteristics of the beans while providing me with the boldness that I like in a cup of coffee.
